Private Label Desiccated Coconut: Retail Pack Formats, MOQ and Co-Pack Lead Time

Buyer’s snapshot

  • Codex Standard CXS 177-1991 sets the rules for what a desiccated coconut pack must be called: the name “Desiccated Coconut”, an oil-content descriptor, and optionally the cut. Those three words decide most of your front-of-pack artwork.
  • Silk Foods Ceylon (SFC) packs desiccated coconut for private label in 100 g, 200 g, 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg retail formats, plus 25 kg bulk bags, from a BRCGS and FSSC 22000 V6 audited facility in Matale.
  • The bulk MOQ is 1 MT per SKU. In 250 g pouches that is about 4,000 units, so the first order is a pack-format decision as much as a volume decision.
  • PO to dispatch is 2 to 3 weeks. Sea freight adds 3 to 4 weeks to the EU and Australia, 4 to 5 weeks to the US.
  • This is for brand owners and retailers building their own coconut SKU. If the plan is commodity tonnage on a fixed annual price, a dedicated high-volume mill is the better fit.

A private label desiccated coconut order looks simple on a quote: one product, one MOQ, one price per kilo. The decisions that set the launch date sit around the product: which pouch protects a 64% oil ingredient for a full shelf life, what the label must say, how many units a tonne becomes, and which steps can run in parallel. This piece takes them in the order a first order meets them.

The grade and fat questions that come before packaging are covered in the desiccated coconut fat and moisture specification guide and the grade selection guide for bakery and confectionery. This one starts after you have picked a grade.

What retail pack formats can a private label desiccated coconut SKU use?

For retail, SFC packs desiccated coconut in stand-up pouches at 100 g, 200 g, 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg, in kraft, white kraft, matt black or foil-barrier film, with an optional clear window. Bulk goes in 25 kg bags with a food-grade poly liner. The right choice depends on the shelf, the grade and how long the product has to last.

PackTypical channelBarrier and lookWhat to weigh
Kraft stand-up pouch, 100 to 250 gSpecialty grocery, health stores, onlinePaper outer, resealable, natural lookGood shelf presence; check the inner barrier layer against the shelf life you want
Pouch with clear window, 200 to 500 gSupermarket baking aisleShows the shred and colourLight reaches the product through the window; the window is a trade-off against oxidation
Foil or clear-front foil pouch, 250 g to 1 kgLonger shelf-life programmes, exportHighest barrier to oxygen, moisture and lightHigher film cost per unit; worth it for full-fat grades
Bulk bag, 25 kgBakery and confectionery manufacturers, repackersKraft multiwall with poly linerNot a retail format; sold as ingredient supply

Film structures, sizes and print methods are confirmed per SKU at quote stage.

Desiccated coconut has a water activity of about 0.52, dry enough to resist mould but still able to take up moisture from humid air, and full-fat grades carry roughly 64% oil that can turn stale with oxygen and light. A pouch is a shelf-life component, not just a bag. Ask for the film structure in writing, with the shelf life the specification states for it.

How many retail units does a first order make?

One metric tonne is 4,000 pouches of 250 g, 2,000 pouches of 500 g, or 1,000 pouches of 1 kg, before fill allowance. Because the MOQ is counted in tonnes and not in units, small formats produce large unit counts. That is the part first-time private label buyers tend to misjudge.

Retail pack (net)Units from 1 MT
100 g10,000
200 g5,000
250 g4,000
500 g2,000
1 kg1,000

Arithmetic only: net weight divided into 1,000 kg. Real counts are slightly lower once fill allowance and line losses are agreed.

A boutique brand selling 400 units a month of a 250 g pouch holds ten months of stock on a first order, a long time against a stated shelf life. Two questions to put to any supplier before committing: whether the 1 MT can be shared across pack sizes of the same grade, and whether a second grade counts as a second SKU. Multi-SKU orders multiply the minimum, as they do on every SFC coconut line.

Where the Silk Route Ventures model doesn’t fit Buyers who want fewer than 1,000 units of a single pack to test a market. Programmes priced on a fixed annual tonnage contract with no specification beyond “desiccated coconut”. For those briefs, a local repacker working from a bulk bag is the more honest answer, and SRV will say so on the first call.

What has to be on a desiccated coconut label?

Codex CXS 177-1991 requires the product name “Desiccated Coconut”, preceded or followed by the common name accepted in the country of retail sale, and says the name should indicate the oil content. The cut (fine, medium, extra-fine) may be shown. Beyond Codex, the destination market’s labelling law sets the rest.

Each part has a consequence for artwork:

  • Name. “Desiccated Coconut” is the base name; the common name in your market may differ, so check local rules.
  • Oil content. The name should reflect the oil band: full-fat desiccated coconut is at least 60% oil, and “low fat” and “partially defatted” cover lower bands. If you are buying a 28% fat grade, the front of the pack cannot read like the full-fat product. The band definitions are set out in the low-fat desiccated coconut formulation guide.
  • Sizing. Naming the cut is optional but useful on a retail shelf.
  • Non-retail containers. For bulk bags, the name, lot identification, the name and address of the manufacturer, packer, distributor or importer, and storage instructions must appear on the container itself.

On allergens: in the EU, coconut is not among the 14 allergens listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, so it is not emphasised in the ingredient list on that basis. In the US, the FDA’s January 2025 revised allergen guidance removed coconut from its list of tree nuts, so a “Contains: tree nuts” statement is no longer a default for a coconut-only product. Whether to add a voluntary or precautionary line is a question for the brand’s own regulatory adviser, and SFC supplies the allergen declaration for the SKU on request.

For organic claims, USDA Organic and EU Organic apply to selected SKUs and are confirmed against the certificate scope, as explained in the organic desiccated coconut sourcing guide. An organic pouch needs the organic certificate details on the label, so the claim has to be settled before artwork, not after.

How long does co-packing take from signed PO to shelf?

At SFC, PO to dispatch runs 2 to 3 weeks on standard grades and formats. Sea freight adds 3 to 4 weeks to the EU and Australia and 4 to 5 weeks to the US, so a first EU order reaches the buyer roughly 5 to 7 weeks after the PO, provided artwork and film are ready.

The critical path usually isn’t the line. It’s the printed film. Artwork needs approving, a converter needs to print and ship the pouches, and the lead time for that depends on the converter and the print method, which is a question for the pack supplier rather than for SFC. Brands that order film only after signing the PO often add several weeks to a schedule that the factory could have held at 2 to 3.

StageDurationCan it run in parallel?
Sample request to courier arrival3 to 5 business days transitStarts the clock; runs alongside artwork
Custom grade, blend or format development3 to 4 weeks maximum from signed brief to approved formulationOnly needed for non-standard SKUs
Printed film from the converterPer the converterYes: order against approved artwork while samples are tested
Production and packing2 to 3 weeks from PO to dispatchStarts at PO, once film is on site
Sea freight3 to 4 weeks EU and Australia, 4 to 5 weeks USNo

A standard-grade SKU skips the development row. A custom blend, such as a flavoured or sweetened format, adds up to 3 to 4 weeks at the front without changing the production window. The coconut chips formats guide shows how flavoured formats are specified on the same repacking cell.

Consider a UK baking brand that signs its PO on a Monday and only then briefs a converter for printed pouches. The factory is ready in three weeks, the film is not, and the container waits. This is a hypothetical, but it is the most common avoidable delay on a first private label run, and it costs weeks, not days.

What does the factory side of the order look like?

The SFC repack and mill line runs 100 to 200 kg per hour, roughly 1 to 2 MT per day on a single shift, so a 1 MT lot is about half a day to a day of line time. Retail pouch filling rates depend on size and film, and are quoted per project. Every batch ships with a certificate of analysis; the document set is covered in the coconut and coconut flour capability brief, and the audit questions worth asking any supplier are in the guide to qualifying a coconut contract manufacturer.

Buyer’s checklist: before approving a private label desiccated coconut SKU

  1. Grade (fine, medium or extra-fine) and fat band stated in the specification, with the test method
  2. Moisture ceiling and microbiological panel written into the contract, not only the catalogue
  3. Pouch structure, size and net weight in writing, with the shelf life that applies to that structure
  4. Storage instruction and best-before basis agreed, and printed on the pack
  5. Label name and oil-content wording checked against CXS 177-1991 and the destination market
  6. Allergen declaration and any organic certificate scope confirmed for the SKU
  7. Whether 1 MT can be split across pack sizes of the same grade
  8. Artwork approved and film ordered during the sample stage, not after the PO
  9. Batch COA and shipping document set agreed before the first PO

Frequently asked questions

What is the MOQ for private label desiccated coconut?

The bulk MOQ at SFC is 1 MT per SKU, with 2 to 3 weeks from PO to dispatch. In retail packs, 1 MT is about 4,000 pouches of 250 g or 2,000 of 500 g. Multi-SKU orders multiply the minimum, so confirm in writing how pack sizes are counted.

Does Silk Foods Ceylon pack desiccated coconut under a customer’s own label?

Yes. SFC packs desiccated coconut in fine and medium cuts under the buyer’s brand, in retail pouches from 100 g to 1 kg as well as 25 kg bulk bags, at its BRCGS and FSSC 22000 V6 audited facility in Matale. Pack film, size and label content are agreed per SKU before production.

How long does it take to launch a private label desiccated coconut product?

Standard grades take 2 to 3 weeks from PO to dispatch, then 3 to 4 weeks by sea to the EU or Australia, or 4 to 5 weeks to the US. A custom blend adds up to 3 to 4 weeks of R&D. Printed film is usually the longest item, so order it against approved artwork during sampling.

Is coconut an allergen on a desiccated coconut label?

It depends on the market. Coconut is not on the EU’s list of 14 allergens in Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. In January 2025 the US FDA removed coconut from its list of tree nuts in revised allergen guidance. The brand’s regulatory adviser makes the final call, and SFC provides an allergen declaration per SKU.
